In a race of attrition the Martini racing Porsche 917K driven by Gijs van Lennep and Dr. Helmut Marko scored a deserved victory from the similar JW entered machine of Attwood and Muller. The lightweight magnesium car took the lead in the 13th hour and after crossing the finish for the final time it had covered a total distance of 3315 miles at an average speed of 138 miles per hour, both Le mans records. Unique in Le Mans history, the same driving team of Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro and Tom Kristensen were victorious over three consecutive years driving the Audi Sport Team Joest Type R8. The image shows the 2002 race with Pirro negotiating the first chicane at dusk. Depicted left is a study of the winning car in 2000 with Kristensen driving, whilst to the right is Biela winner in the wet race of 2001.

Bentley returned to the Sarthe after an absence of over 70 years. Driving the EXP Speed 8 it was the car driven by Butch Leitzinger, Eric van de Poele and Andy Wallace which finished third overall, winning the LMP 900 class.
